Chapter Thirteen

James rose the next morning to see that a steady drizzle was falling. Even so, he resolved to go for a short ride before breakfast but he was scarcely half a mile from the Hall before it began raining hard. Why on earth had he set out in such a miserable weather? he wondered bitterly as he turned Goliath round. Maybe in hopes of clearing his head?

In hopes of salving his conscience, more like. What kind of rogue was he, to make advances on his young housekeeper? Theo had suggested that Emma Bryant had designs on him, but James knew it was the other way round. He was the villain of the piece, no doubt about it.

It was no more than a kiss, he’d tried to tell himself. A kiss for May Day. But even that was completely over the limit. He could try to fool himself it was light-hearted, but he’d felt his self-control vanish when her lips softened beneath his, for she’d tasted as sweet as honey. He could still recall how she’d melted in his embrace and her small breasts had pressed almost yearningly against him...

You’re heading for danger, James.

She might not have realised what she was doing, but he had no such excuse. He had always claimed to be honourable, but no man of honour seduced a servant! From the beginning she’d declared her loyalty to him—yet was this how he repaid her?

Indulging in erotic fantasies about Emma Bryant was nothing short of diabolical. Any more episodes like yesterday’s would no doubt result in her leaving and what would she do then? The picture of her labouring at yet another ill-paid job, alone and unprotected, left him feeling responsible and deeply disturbed.
